lives and works in Seoul
Daniel Wheedong Kim(b. 1996, Pohang, South Korea) explores art as a way of life. Growing up in 11 cities, including New York, London, Tokyo, Auckland, and Seoul, he developed a multifaceted cultural identity. Adapting to different cultural environments required him to shift his interests dynamically and diversely, a habit that continues to shape his practice.
This observer-like perspective influences his work, which takes various forms of imagery based on his broad interests in media and culture. He builds images through multiple thin layers, using techniques like scratches and gradations to reveal the ephemerality and materiality of digital images.
He compares contemporary images—constantly produced, replicated, disseminated, and erased across mobile screens, billboards, and print media—to ghosts. Viewing the present era through the lens of "Hyper-Ghostism," he translates this concept into painting. With screen media as a constant in his reality and a continued exploration of pictorial composition, he examines how materially tangible painting should position itself in an era of rapid digital expansion and pluralism.
